Race Street

On Saturday March 23, 2013, we visited Race Street in Fort Worth, TX to observe the revitalization of this unique neighborhood.  Their Facebook Profile gave us a more in-depth look at the efforts to rebuild the area.  This area has the potential to be very successful just like the Bishop Art district in Dallas.

Our earlier speaker, Rik Adamski, and his wife also have a studio in the area.  We also met with the "accidental developer" of this unique area.

Below are a few pictures I took while visiting the area

REAL School Gardens

Guest Speaker: Sarah Greer

REAL School Gardens partners with high-poverty elementary schools to create learning gardens that become an integral part of their teaching culture and community. They support the design and installation of school gardens, train teachers to use them to improve children’s learning and build community around them to nurture support for urban schools. When teachers take learning outdoors, children achieve greater success in school by becoming more engaged learners, more effective team members and also healthier people.  REAL School Garden is supporting 92 schools in the DFW metroplex.

REAL School Gardens unique outdoor classrooms designed to provide hands-on experimental learning opportunities for elementary-age children.  Below are pictures of a few school gardens:

Partners for Sacred Places

Partners for Sacred Places brings together a national network of expert professionals who understand the value of a congregation’s architectural assets, its worth as a faith community, and the significance of its service to the community at large.

The organization was founded in 1989 to help preserve historical churches.  Their Texas office is located at 6040 Camp Bowie Boulevard, Suite 62, Fort Worth, Texas 76116.

They have helped many of the local historical churches with grants and Space Matching Services.

TACTICAL URBANISM

Guest Speaker Rik Adamski spoke with us on March 23, 2013 about DYI Tactical Urbanism.

Tactical Urbanism is aimed to develop urban practices with the use of new technologies, which improves the livability of our towns and cities, starting at the street, block, and public space.

Klyde Warren Park (http://www.klydewarrenpark.org/ ) is a perfect example of Tactical Urbanism.  There are many activities that we can explore while visiting the park.

In Atlantic City, New Jersey, a group of people organized the largest yoga class on public street.

I was Corsicana and saw a real-life example of tactical urbanism.  A parking lot of a grocery store converted into a mobile restaurant serving delicious crawfish.

LEED

Amari Roskelly of Jacobs Engineering spoke with us on March 23, 2013 about some of the LEED projects.  This was my first exposure to LEED and sustainable projects.

The idea of being Green or using renewable source of energy has been in existent for years.  However, new technologies have made it more achievable.

Unfortunately, most Green projects belong to U.S government. Fort Carson in Colorado recently certified as LEED GOLD

In recent years, we started to see more green buildings in the DFW area.  The newest green project is the Perot Museum of Nature & Science.  Condensations from the HVAC are used for irrigation systems, which reduces water costs.

Another noticeable GREEN project is the Trinity River Audobon.  It was designed to minimized the "heat island effect"from asphalt and concrete.  The facility is equipped with low-flow toilets, which reduces water consumptions by at least 20%.
